Aktuell ist es aber weder so, dass bauliche Barrieren im Sinne der UN-Behindertenrechtskonvention für alle in Deutschland voll erkennbar sind, noch ist der Mehrheit der Fachleuteumfänglich bekannt, wie diese Barrieren zukünftig nicht mehrgebaut werden sollen.
    Erst im Rahmen von weiteren gesellschaftlichen Sensibilisierungs- und Lernprozessen wird das volle Ausmaß der heute produzierten Barrieren im Bereich Bau-en und Wohnen und den Schnittstellen zu anderen Disziplinen deutlich werden. Offensichtlich gibt es jedoch nur wenige aktuelle und systematische Untersuchungen und keine verwendbaren Überprüfungsmechanismen zum Stand der Umsetzung der Barrierefreiheit. Methodische Untersuchungen zum Stand der Umsetzung des Artikels nine der UN-Behindertenrechtskonvention gibt es in Deutschland gar nicht. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden seit einigen Jahren mit einer eigenen Checkliste nicht nur baurechtlich verbindliche Regelungen untersucht, sondern weiter reichende Aspekte, die den Stand der Technik beschreiben. Stichprobenartige Untersuchungen in vier Reihenzwischen 2007 und 2010 in insgesamt forty-one öffentlichen Gebäuden und ergänzende Interviews geben in harten und weichen Faktoren Aufschluss über systematische Störungen der Grund-tendenz zur Barrierefreiheit. Es wurde nachgewiesen, dass die barrierefreie Grundtendenz systematisch gestört wird und dass sensorische Barrieren eine untergeordnete Rolle in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung spielen. Aus der Checkliste können systematisch Maßnahmen zur Beseitigung und eine Prioritätenlisteabgeleitet werden. Nutzbar ist die Checkliste in der Planungsphase auch als umfangreicher Prüfkatalog.
